The Strange Bird
A Borne Story
By Jeff Vandermeer

The Strange Bird started out as a really good idea. I loved the concept and plotline enough to purchase this book at the full retail price at a book store in the Chicagoland area. It started out promising, as it slowly built an intriguing plot while peppering in characters as it developed. I am not sure when it happened, but somewhere in the middle of it, it lost me. I lost all grasp of what was going on, as well as what I was reading. The descriptions and dialogue began to have a hollow amateurish feel. It felt like the author was telling a story, had the whole book outlined, from beginning to end, in his head, yet when it was told, it is difficult, if not impossible, to understand what is happening. Re-reading did not help either. I tried that. The biggest compliment I can give is, IU am glad it was short, so the torturous reading was kept to a minimum. My thoughts are as follows- you can ignore my words and read it anyway. If you do, I really hope that works for you if you do. If you trust me, however. Avoid all books by this author. You can do so much better.
