Question the Silhouettes
AIDS and a Family in Crisis
By Norma A. Burdett, R.N, as told to Thomas F. Dwyer, Ed.D.

Question the Silhouettes takes a poignant and personal look at one family dealing with acceptance and eventually grieving for their son and brother. This is the story of the Burdett family. Jimmy Burdett, the son of Norma Burdett and her husband, announces to his somewhat conservative family that he is gay and first has to deal with trying to have his family accept him. Then, he eventually developed AIDS and passed away. During those difficult years, Jimmy and his family had to deal with the everyday struggle of outside people not understanding the deadly disease of AIDS.

The writing in Question the Silhouettes shows how AIDS afflicted the Burdett family personally. The writing clearly shows how the family felt at all different aspects of Jimmy's disease and their own feelings of trying to deal with Jimmy's sexuality and eventual death.

This reader congratulates Ms. Burdett and the rest of her family for coming forward and telling the story of Jimmy. This reader feels that many families that are currently dealing with these issues can gain something from seeing what the Burdett family did and through the love that they felt for Jimmy.
