Hetty
The
Genius and Madness of America's First Female Tycoon
By
Charles Slack
"The Witch
of Wall Street" was the wealthiest woman in America, with over
one-hundred million dollars at her death in 1916...well before women
even had the right to vote. Hetty Green, unfortunately, was mostly
remembered for her parsimonious nature. She was a compulsive tightwad
and is even listed as the world's greatest miser in the Guiness
Book of World Records.
Charles Stack tells us of a lady who was a true
original, who parlayed an inheritance of $500,000 into millions.
In this delightful and entertaining biography, Slack tells how Hetty
Green built an empire of stocks, bonds, railroads, and real estate.
She gained her financial education and expertise by reading the
financial newspapers to her father.
Hetty was vengeful and ruthless with
anyone she perceived as her financial enemy, and was generally considered
unhappy, but Slack contends that she was living by her own rules
and was satisfied to be the only woman in her generation to make
a reputation as a financial genius.
Slack shows the humor and wit possessed
by this drab-appearing lady with the colorful personality, as well
as her remarkable accomplishments. Includes 8 pages of black and
white photos, a bibliography and index.
I enjoy reading about quirky historical
personalities, and this lady helped to change history and influence
women's rights. What an inspiration to today's women! Hetty Green,
I like your attitude! I could learn a lot from you!
