Timothy O'Brien's reading of TrumpNation: The Art of Being The Donald has the
feel (sound) of a reporter giving an update on the rise and public appeal of America's
favorite entrepreneur-The Donald.
O'Brien takes the reader through the various stages of Trump's life and in doing so
captures the essence of Trump's personality-including the brash arrogance and egoism and
his genius for making money.
In telling the story, O'Brien gives the reader a great deal of information about the
architecture of New York and the building business of the city. Trump's dealing with
civic officials, which was often fractious, is well documented.
The story of Trump's dad seemed a little long, but was probably necessary to explain
some of the dealings with bankers and others who were necessary for Trump's success.
After following the rise, fall and rise again of Trump, one doesn't know whether to
admire or detest him, but one thing is for certain-he will be noticed, and that is Trump's
ultimate aim.
O'Brien's reading is captivating. This is the only occasion in which I have found
it easier to listen rather than read a book. For a brief history of The Donald, this
is a good (and easy) place to start.
