Jack's Life
The Life Story of C.S. Lewis
by Douglas Gresham
Since the release of the first book of The Chronicles of Narnia (and actually just
before), the worlds of Academia and Entertainment have been buzzing about C.S. Lewis,
the author of the fantastical children's series. Better known as "Jack" to the people who
knew him best, Lewis used his own experiences with life and faith to aid him in his writings.
He shared his knowledge with anyone who had enough passion to match his own. There were very
few who had strong connections with him, but authors such as J.R.R. Tolkein, along with
his wife, Joy Gresham, and her sons, David and Douglas, were a few of the privileged who
got a chance to see what "Jack" was really about. Now Douglas Gresham, the younger of
the two boys, has given Lewis' many fans and admirers a chance to see how the brilliant
writer actually lived.
In a heart-twisting story of love, loss, and triumph over constant unrest in a time of
war and unstable alliances, Gresham replays in detail Lewis' life from the beginning.
From his birth to his last years as a grieving widower struggling to hold onto the strength
that gave him the ability to go above and beyond the normal human capacity in everything,
Gresham gives his stepfather a chance to live again in the pages of this well-written book.
I've always been a fan of C.S. Lewis' writings and while doing a senior seminar paper
on the effects of his evolving faith in Christianity on his penning of the Chronicles of
Narnia, I was given a chance to use this book as a reference. Upon picking it up, I
knew I was in for something special, and I was right. Gresham's admiration and love for
his stepfather radiate from every pore of this book, and his telling of the events in
Lewis' life gives the reader a chance to see the deeper inner-workings of the man known
as "Jack."
I highly recommend this book to everyone. It's not just another biography. It's a completely
breath-taking adventure all in itself. |
