Love
Always, Petra
A Story of Courage and the Discovery of Life's Hidden Gifts
by Petra Nemcova and Jane Scovell
Where were you when you heard about the 2004 tsunami? I sat horrified in front of the television
and prayed that more people lived through the catastrophe. Famous and ordinary people from
all different countries perished in the devastating tsunami. Model Petra Nemcova and her
fiancé, photographer Simon Atlee, were vacationing in Thailand. Without warning, the tsunami
changed their whole world. In With Love Always, Petra, author Petra Nemcova describes
the days leading up to the tsunami, her will to survive and to walk again, and her search
for Simon.
The events of the 2004 tsunami play just a part of the book. Nemcova covers many life-changing
aspects. Nemcova describes her childhood in the Czech Republic as a poor and humorless
life. Her family and friends give her happiness. In 1989, the communist regime ends, and
fashion, along with other products, pour into the Czech Republic. Nemcova finds herself
interested in fashion and design. With her friend's prodding, Nemcova visits a local modeling
agency. She soon juggles an unexpected modeling career and her schooling. When castings
interfere with school, Nemcova quits modeling. After graduation, Nemcova meets photographer
Simon Atlee. It may not be love at first sight; it seems more like friendship, respect,
and excitement at first sight. Atlee is charming and gentle. His eyes shine the bluest
color she has ever seen. Atlee and Nemcova date for eighteen months, in which they combine
their personal lives within the hectic fashion industry. Nemcova recalls their last conversation
about children, which was their silent sign of the next step of the relationship: marriage.
In Love Always, Petra, Nemcova shows that her strength comes from a variety of
life struggles. My favorite parts describe the touching moments of her and Atlee's love.
Her passion about Atlee made me feel like I knew them. A bittersweet moment comes when
Nemcova recovered Atlee's cloth bracelet. I felt some of the phrasing and pacing of the
stories gave the book the feel of a journal. Continuing to help tsunami victims, Nemcova
is donating the book's proceeds to "Give2Asia/Happy Hearts Fund". To discover strength
in losses, grab some tissues and read Love Always, Petra. |
