Dewey
The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World

by Vicki Myron, Bret Witter
Read by Suzanne Toren

Dewey is the story of a tiny orange kitten who found a home in the Spencer, Iowa Public Library. When the staff arrived for work one bitterly cold winter morning, they heard sounds coming from the overnight and weekend drop box. It sounded like a baby crying. The Head Librarian, Vicki, had begun to move books out of the drop box when she saw him. Since the opening to the drop box had been propped open, the inside of the box was as cold as the outside. And when Vickie pulled the eight week old kitten out, he was shivering from cold and fear. He was so thin, Vicki could feel all his ribs beneath his fur and the pads of his feet were frostbitten.

For the staff, it was love at first sight, especially for Vicki. But the problem was what should they do with him? They couldn’t all take him home and they couldn’t keep him at the library. Or could they?

Vicki consulted the library’s board of directors about keeping the kitten at the library. They agreed to try and, if they patrons approved, he would live at the library. The staff named him Dewey after the creator of the Dewey decimal system and sat back to see the patrons’ reactions.

At first, about half of them shied away from the idea. Mothers worried that their children would suffer more allergies if they were around a cat. One little girl was afraid of Dewey. But once they discovered that the friendly cat loved people and would lie quietly in their laps while they read, Dewey won the hearts of the patrons, even the little girl who was afraid of him.

Dewey is a well-written and sweet story that all cat lovers will love. It warms my heart to hear the story of a stray kitten that makes good. Expertly read by Suzanne Toren, this is a story everyone can enjoy.
