The Elfish Gene
Dungeons, Dragons, and Growing up Strange: A Memoir
by Mark Barrowcliffe
This is the tale of a tall, gangly creature growing up in the town of Coventry, England. At twelve years old Mark
Barrowcliffe is a misfit from the very start, cruising the town on his Woolworths skateboard and sporting his
octagonal sunglasses. He can't communicate with girls so much, if at all, at this age and has only one friend.
To make things worse, during the course of his awkward adolescence he discovers the joys of D&D (Dungeons & Dragons),
a role playing game of fantasy where one can smash in the skull of an orc or fry their brains with a well tooled
magic user. From the moment Mark and D&D meet it’s love at first sight, the kind of love a junky has for that special
box where he hides his best drugs. Mark goes through life in a haze of wizards, dragons, and smoke-filled rooms,
along with the other screaming and fighting male patrons of the game. Will he ever be able to leave the dungeon
behind and escape to the rejuvenating rays of the real world again?
I found The Elfish Gene to be an extremely entertaining read. At times it was hilarious and my booming
laughter rattled the windows while I read. Other times, I felt so sorry for the guy that I wanted to cry. If you have
had any gaming experience or real ties to the world of fantasy then this book is definitely for you. If not, it is
still a very funny read worth your time. |
