One Step Forward
The Life of Ken Dahlberg

by Al Zdon and Warren Mack

I truly enjoyed Ken Dahlberg’s story for many reasons. Authors Al Zdon and Warren Mack help Dahlberg relate his memoir with ease. The writing is fresh and reminiscent of my own father’s stories as a Minnesotan POW. I heard similar war stories growing up, but never fully appreciated them until I was old enough to understand the mental and physical commitment necessary to engage oneself in military service. Ken Dahlberg’s story brought that all back home to me. If you are a history, war, or simply a Minnesota buff, you will enjoy reading One Step Forward with a curious mind and a sentimental heart. To read this story is to follow a hero. Not because he is so accomplished, but because he is an American who took advantage of being an American and is living the American Dream with all of its trials as well as its rewards. Ken Dahlberg lived in an era that called forth its citizens to defend a godly nation and rewarded that willing service with free enterprise for all.

Moreover, he took it to heart. He became all that he could be during his lifetime through commitment, hard work, and faith in a system that provided belief in the future. After the war ended, he returned to Minnesota, married and began his career. One of his inventions, The Pillow Speaker Radio, sold more than 40,000 radios to hospitals across the country. (I actually still have one of their pillow speakers that I found among my father’s things after his death.) His next enterprise was Miracle Ear in 1955. The company Dahlberg began with $3000 capital in 1948 sold for $139 million in 1993.

Today at 90, he is still flying and running a company! War hero, entrepreneur, inventor, family man, and successful at all, he is certainly an example to be heralded. Kudos. You will finish this book with a renewed sense of what it really means to be an American.
