Robert Wagner was born and raised in Beverly Hills. He had always wanted to be an actor. He worked as a
caddy on Beverly Hills golf courses, ingratiating himself with those who would help him realize his dream.
He worked in the studio system, always coming across as a man who treasured friendship more than fame
and fortune. Spencer Tracy was his mentor. He’s had a six decade career in the theatre, movies (A
Kiss Before Dying),and television (Hart to Hart).
After a four-year affair with Barbara Stanwyck, who was twice his age, he married four times. He fell
in love with actress Natalie Wood while making Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Their marriage was heralded
as a "Hollywood love affair" but after a few years they divorced. Only after several years and another
failed marriage did they meet again and remarry. That marriage ended tragically when Natalie vanished
from their boat and drowned. It was never established why she left the boat, but her death devastated
Wagner. A young actress, Jill St. John, was instrumental in helping him cope, and they eventually married.
Wagner's memoirs give a compelling portrait of a handsome and charismatic leading man. They are set
against the fascinating backdrop of the Hollywood studio system, offering colorful glimpses of David
Niven, Spencer Tracy, and Marlon Brando, who among Wagner's many friends.
