Priceless Memories
by Bob Barker and Digby Diehl
Read by Bob Barker
"Barker loves Barker," so says Bob Barker in the last of this 6 CD audio book. And oh,
how true this is. We all love Bob Barker and have enjoyed him for so many years on
Truth or Consequences and The Price is Right. But in this 7 hour rambling
of his life, he mistakes our love for him for an intense interest in every aspect of his
life. He admits he loves talking about himself and does to the point of tediousness. By
the end of the 7 hours, the listener knows way more of Bob Barker than he bargained for
when he slipped the first CD in the player. At least that's what happened to me. I expected
to hear of his adventures on the show, and there's some of that. But the majority seems
to be stories of little connectedness about his lost dog, his less than humorous stories
of his personal life, virtually every moment of his growing up period, and what comes
across as constant bragging of his accomplishments. That's not the Bob Barker I've come
to know from the television. But that is the way the reading comes across. The language
is artificial and the reading is strained. The only point when we see a genuine and
passionate Barker is when he speaks of his animal activism and even that often seems to
be just thrown in without thought to an order. He talks of his learning to fly a Corsair
in WWII in one breath and the next jumps forward forty years to his show. He seems to have
the script before him and reads as if trying to finish in one sitting. He tires and the
reader tires. I credit Bob Barker for writing his life story. I'm just wondering who is
really interested enough to sit through 7 hours of it. |
