The Concise King

by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Edited by: Clayborne Carson, Peter Holloran, Kris Shepard
Read by Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, Dr. Dorothy I. Height, Edward M. Kennedy, Andrew Young

This small, two-disc collection of speeches, sermons, and commentaries gives the listener a brief introduction to the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Underlying any biographical information—mostly provided by commentaries from his associates—is an understanding of his philosophy and dedication to providing the evangelical word of the Bible. Since his death, we have tended to see King in the light of a crusader—and he certainly was—but we often fail to see him in the role he cherished most: a preacher.

Through King’s own words and voice, presented in eight sermons and speeches, the listener has history brought to life in a way that will compel him to reflect on what the life of the past generation was like. Those of us who lived during his time will, through this collection, have our memories brought back to a time which should not have happened—but did—and to a man we should not have needed—but certainly did.

This two-disc set, running approximately three hours, is only a glimpse—a tantalizing taste—of the greatness of a man and his mission not as yet fulfilled or fully appreciated. He is not glorified here or hallowed into monolithic legend. He is a man whose power is in his words and his eloquence, inspiring our passion to keep the dream alive long after the dreamer has died.

Carson’s previous audio book on King, King for Kids (also reviewed on Myshelf), acted as a prelude to The Concise King. Like the prior book, this should be a treasured addition to any library, public or private, and a treasured acquisition by any serious student of social and cultural change, young or old. It would also be a valuable addition to any school course on the subject, secular or religious. Included in the audio book is a series of photos, bringing the charisma of Dr. King back to life. Bravo to Carson, Holloran, and Shepard for making us remember the loss, for allowing us to rejoice at King’s accomplishments, and for urging us to move one step closer to shattering the frightful mirror Dr. King held up to us. Bravo.
