Passionate
About Their Work: 151 Celebrities, Artists, and Experts on Creativity,
by Leslie C. Halpern, is the book for those who love what they do
should read. Why? Because I found it was a motivating read. It pumped
me up.
When I first got the book, I looked at the chapter headings and
knew right away that it would be an interesting read. The chapters
that caught my eyes were Overcoming Obstacles, Taking Risks, Embracing
Change, Finding the Humor and Best Advice. And yes, I was given
information on how to do all of those things. But let me start with
the author. Halpern introduces you to each chapter with insight
of her own such as, “Should the risks be emotional, spiritual,
physical, financial or a mixture of all four?” Hmm, is what
I began to think. Good question. Another intro she gave was, “In
keeping with the “sensitive artist” stereotype, most
people admit to being their own worst critics”. Again my thought
was, this is so very true.
Now let me get on to the book. One of the best inspirations given
was from the actor Paul Reiser, “Don’t accept no for
an answer”. This was to help an artist, writer, film director
or whomever in all genres when knowing how to deal with obstacles
in your life. Another good piece of advice was “Negativity
is infectious, and you have to get rid of it”, from Brandon
Walter, screenwriter, producer and director. Lastly, “There
are no limits to how far you can push yourself when you have to,”
says author Bruce Weinstein, Ph.D.. Both these artists were talking
about overcoming obstacles.
What can one get from this book? A ton of inspiration and a ton
of advice. I know I did. Not only did I feel better after reading
the book, I knew that I still had work to do to stay in the mode
of being passionate about my work as a writer. One thing for sure,
the old saying, it’s never too late to learn something
new, still holds.
Now I could go on and on about the inspiration and advice inside
this book, but you must read it for yourself. And believe me when
I tell you, there is something in it for everyone: whether you are
a writer, film producer, screenwriter or artist with paint. It all
boils down to finding out if you are really, truly passionate about
your work. Passionate About Their Work: 151 Celebrities, Artists,
and Experts on Creativity, by Leslie C. Halpern, is a must
read.
