Pam Grier divides this
memoir into three segments – “The Early Years”
(1949-1970), “’Fros and Freaks” (1970-1989), and
“Finding the Balance” (1990-present).
In this candid and occasionally
shocking book, the actress discusses her long career as an entertainer
and performer as well as her relationships with Richard Pryor, Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar and Freddie Prinz Sr. among others.
Of her relationship
with Abdul-Jabbar that ended in their parting ways, Grier writes,
“I loved him, the world loved him. He loved me, and he promised
to marry, protect, and cherish me and take care of our children.
But all of that was contingent upon my embracing a religion that
was bigger than both of us and our love. I didn’t feel the
draw. There were too many red flags, and I couldn’t fake it
because I respected Kareem and myself too much.”
Besides sharing her
love life and the vagaries of her career, Grier also tells the story
of her ongoing battle with cancer. Purportedly she holds nothing
back which is why this is such a riveting and interesting read that
has received many positive comments from the critics. You’ll
find 16 pages of photos that flesh out this celebrity memoir.
