This is a funny book! It’s a good laugh for serious hunters and it’s a vindication for those who would like to be serious. Heimbuch tells the story of how, over a four year period, he finally got his first kill. He went from a guy who had no interest in guns, (when he asked what is it for, the answer was, of course, for shooting), to a dedicated hunter.

His father had been interested in guns his whole life and had never offered him the opportunity to own a gun or to hunt. Then, at the age of married with children, his father suddenly called him to the basement one day, opened the safe and handed him a Winchester over-under twelve gauge shotgun along with five minutes of instruction. He thought his father had suddenly contracted cancer and was dying. No, he just thought he was now of the age to be interested.

His account of his first few pheasant hunts is humorous. And, how he got the bug after a winged miss. And then, how he tramped through brush and found himself on cracking ice, but continued on to get his kill, one bird. You will laugh at his account of the dressing and eating of this bird.

This is a Great Christmas gift for men who like to do manly things and those who don’t.
