When I first read the title of this book I automatically thought it would be about religion and the different roles women have played throughout the history of religion. Once I started reading this I found that I was completely wrong in my assumption of what the book would be about. Mae Edwards is not only an author, she is a songwriter and poet as well. From the first section until the very end she has put her thoughts and feelings on different aspects of “other-worldly” things into song lyrics and poems, and she put them all together in this book. On the side of the pages of her songs and poems, she writes a brief story as well.

Some of Ms. Edwards’ songs and poems really threw me for a loop. I thought “this woman is nuts” quite a few times while reading this book. But some of the other poems Ms. Edwards wrote were really great and I understood the feelings and the emotions behind the words. One song I really enjoyed reading the lyrics to is titled “Face In The Crowd,” and Mae Edwards calls it her “anti-slavery” mantra. I liked how Mae Edwards wrote her memoir through song and poetry instead of just writing a long and possibly boring book about her life and her thoughts on different subjects.

I don’t think this is a book that a lot of people would want to read in general, but if readers were looking for something completely different to read than what he or she is used to, then this would be a good choice.
