Like his previous audiobook, The Pound a Day Diet, this new work emphasizes eating fresh, organic, locally grown foods that are lactose-free, gluten-free, and sugar-free through a collection of original recipes. Award-winning celebrity chef and cookbook author (10 books so far), Rocco Dispirito again provides his own charismatic narration. The audiobook cover states, “As of the date of publication, Rocco Dispirito is a celebrity spokesperson for fitbit.” Therefore it’s not unexpected that he discusses how to burn calories as you actually cook. By wearing calorie counting devices (such as fitbit), readers are encouraged to notice that chopping foods, setting the table, washing the dishes, and walking to the market can burn nearly as many calories as consumed in the meal.

This 14-day program gets to the point quickly on two CDs. Dispirito summarizes current thought about health and nutrition, offers a pep talk for skeptics who think eating better has to cost more, and then provides a PDF containing a recipe index with calorie count broken down into beverage, breakfast, lunch, dinner, soup and salad, snack, and dessert. There’s also a chart with calories burned during food preparation activities (divided by activity and calories burned by weight), plus lists of sugar, milk, and gluten products to avoid, and a list of his favorite foods and ingredients. Next come meal plans for 14 days, with calorie count, fat grams, and carbs, a shopping list for each week, followed by 75 new recipes.

Some unfamiliar ingredients, such as psyllium husk powder and gluten-free reduced-sodium tamari, appear on his shopping lists. Health food stores, alternative grocery stores, or online stores may offer these products. As a celebrity chef in New York City, he has experience with and access to a wide variety of ingredients that might be unavailable to those in smaller rural or suburban areas. Listing substitutions for these hard-to-find ingredients would make the recipes more user-friendly for readers.

Overall, this audiobook provides a jumpstart to weight loss by condensing the latest nutrition information, encouraging active food preparation, and describing tempting new recipe ideas.
