Just try to remember this is nonfiction because it reads like a novel. I think this is always a treat for the reader because nonfiction can sometimes be too dry. Although as a reader of nonfiction, the thing we all like about it is that it is factual. Potter has given this story the best of both worlds in his stylish writing.

The author goes into great detail regarding the history of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti or the DRC, producing wines that are the extraordinaire of the industry. He takes the reader on a journey through France’s wine-making history leading up to the crime.

The short story in the book involves the perpetrator, ex-con Jaques Soltys, who held out a ransom note to the DRC. He is arrested and convicted. But his story is just one aspect of Potter’s entire account of the love of wine-making and dedication to the art. The crime itself only took place in the last couple of years. Potter’s book is a century long lesson.

If you are looking for a great Christmas gift for a wine lover or connoisseur, this is a wonderful choice to add to their collection. Wine lovers always enjoy a new variety, and this certainly offers that.
