The
Cabinet of Curiosities By Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child Time Warner Audio Books - June 2002 ISBN: 158621280X - Abridged Audio Horror / Thriller Reviewed by: Brenda Weeaks, MyShelf.Com Douglas Preston and Lincoln have created a thriller to rival the best Vincent Price horror flick. In fact, the climax of this tale reads as if written for King of Scream. The Cabinet of Curiosities was considered the first Natural History Museums. Back in the old days, it was where strange things were placed (in cabinets) for people to come see. We have since learned that most things in the Cabinet of Curiosities were fakes. In the case of this one, which was held in a building being torn down, the remains of victims murdered over 130 years ago have surfaced. Since the remains have been uncovered, a copycat has begun recreating the sadistic murders. At first, FBI agent Pendergast looks up archaeologist Nora Kelly to help him with the skeletons that were uncovered. While checking the remains, they find a letter written in blood in a young woman's dress. The information is just the beginning of their journey into the powerfully insane. When the copycat killer starts up, they know they need to step up the investigation. Soon journalist Bill Smithback joins them, and all three end up in a final scene that without a doubt was written for the big screen. "The Cabinet of Curiosities" is a story for the acquired taste. If you like a macabre tale that balances on the edge of reality, yet doesn't read as grotesque as most horror tales, this is the story for you. In the Time Warner audio version, renowned actor Rene Auberjonois's voice creates an eerie atmosphere as he accurately reads each part. While playing the last two tapes, I had an audience gather, and like viewing a car wreck, they were taken aback, yet unable to turn away.
