Body Count
by Shaun Hutson
Somebody is making snuff movies and streaming them over the Internet. The "stars" of these films appear to be random
kidnap victims, who are then chased in various elaborate ways and killed. It looks like a case for Detective Inspector
Joe Chapman, who is keen to at last catch up with a maker of one of those legendary snuff movies. But this is no
open-and-shut case, and things are about to get very nasty indeed for him and somebody he loves.
You know without a shadow of a doubt that anything by Mr. Hutson is going to be a) gory, b) violent and c) exciting,
although not necessarily in that order. He is adept at writing action, and the plot unfolds in a succession of short,
breathless chapters that almost leave the reader gasping for air. Here is a writer with a successful formula that he
is going to stick with, and if it works, then I’m not going to suggest that it is a bad idea. If you like your plots
convoluted you might find this to be rather linear, but it is the heart-stopping action you read this type of novel
for, and he certainly delivers. Perhaps a little more variety in the content might have been a good idea, but this
is not a long novel. If you are a fan, and enjoy this type of novel, then this is a good example of it. |
