The Harrowing
by Alexandra Sokoloff
When almost all the students go home from Baird College for Thanksgiving, five remain.
There is Robin with her lunatic mother who cannot bear the thought of going home, beefy
sports star Patrick, Sexy Lisa, gloomy musician Cain and nerdy Martin. Short of something
to do, they find an old ouija board and decide to find out if there is anybody out there.
Unfortunately for them, there is.
How I do like a good old-fashioned ghost story! Currently books with ghosts in them are
either romances, detective stories or very gory and violent. There is nothing of any of
these modern trends in this short novel, instead just the highly suitable setting of a spooky
old building, a planchette and some bored misfits. It is also true to say that there is
nothing very inventive about this scenario, and that there is nothing in this book that
could be described as ground breaking or even original. What it does instead is update the
classic ghost story for a modern audience and show that it can be just as effective if it
involves teenagers in a college. Basically this is a novel about evil—the true kind
that exists both outside and inside us. |
