He is Legend
An Anthology Celebrating Richard Matheson

Edited by Christopher Conlon

Only a serious fan like me would pay the $60.00 list price of this book, but it is worth every penny. In his introduction, Ramsey Campbell calls Richard Matheson "the greatest living writer of modern horror fiction, and certainly the most innovative." These are riveting new stories by some of the best horror writers today, based on the plots and characters from the Grand Master.

Getting the book off to a roaring start, Stephen King and his son, Joe Hill, collaborated on "Throttle," a story that is a different slant on "Matheson's Duel." "Duel" starts off leisurely and escalates the suspense in the story of a predatory trucker and innocent travelers. "Throttle"  starts off with high tension that doesn't let up as a motorcycle gang takes on a trucker, along with a bit of discord in a father and son relationship that will keep you guessing.

There is a fantastic prequel to "Hell House" by Nancy A. Collins, and John Shirley writes a sequel to "Somewhere in Time" with a new hero and a different destination. Thomas F. Monteleone does a variation on "The Shrinking Man" from the wife's point of view.  Matheson's son, Richard Christian Matheson joins the celebration of his father with a powerful variation on "Legion of Plotters," with the chilling story "Venturi." The crown-jewel is the first time publication of an original screenplay called "Conjure Wife" by Richard Matheson and the late Charles Beaumont.

This is a huge book that you won't read in one sitting...and it may send you looking for Matheson's original stories that inspired these authors.  Don't expect to sleep well after reading these stories.
