Quick - what wine goes best with lamb? How much of your party budget should be allocated to invitations? What color cloth is best to remove the stains your party guests generously left behind? If the answers to these questions don't come immediately to your tongue, have no fear. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Throwing a Great Party can help.

Event planning experts Phyllis Cambria and Patty Sachs have partying covered from tots to black tie affairs and everything in between. They give step-by-step directions for preparing invitations, choosing food and drink, decorating the home or hall, and dealing with suppliers. And if you can't think of a good reason to hold a party, they provide a chapter on seasonal celebrations, and include a list of U.S. holidays at the end of the book.

Scattered throughout the book are little bonus tips the authors call "Chips and Tips." For example, in the post-party chapter, they suggest, "Even foods that have been sitting on ice or over heat are suspect. While it will lengthen the food's freshness, it's not the same as being in an oven or a refrigerator. Remember, when in doubt, toss it out!" Other boxes throughout the book warn of common pitfalls party organizers make or give us interesting trivia from parties past.

The book is well-organized and easy to follow. It is also well-written and thorough. Probably its best feature is that it gives the party host dozens, maybe hundreds, of ideas to make almost any party special. I highly recommend it for anyone who want to make their party planning easier and their party more successful.
