Wire
(Craft Workshop)
By Mary
Maguire
Wire seems to have
come out of the tool closet and into its own recently, and it can
be bought in all colors, various thicknesses and fashioned many
ways into a number of intriguing and useful items. This book shows
you what can be done with wire, and even how things like the humble
coat hanger and chicken wire can be pressed into service.
Then
there are pipe cleaners, paperclips and wire tape, and you have
already amassed most of your materials if you can find these in
your home, and if you can’t you are sure to live not too far
from a DIY store. It is heartening to note, too, that the equipment
needed is the sort of very ordinary stuff that your shed or garage
is bound to contain: pliers, a hammer, block of wood and a hand
drill, for example. So, you don’t need too much to get stuck
in.
Make a loo (or toilet paper) roll
holder, bathroom caddy, adorn greetings cards, a mobile for a child’s
room, reseat an old chair, make a bottle carrier that you can take
to the supermarket and (my own favorite) a lovely garden lantern
made almost entirely of chicken wire. There is a section showing
you various techniques of wirework (best to practice these first
before starting any project, as they are a bit harder than they
look) and every project has staged instructions accompanied by photographs.
I confess to being most impressed with this imaginative and highly
accessible book. I’ve seen other books on the subject, but
this is the first one I truly wanted to own. There just doesn’t
seem to be anything to its detriment; highly recommended.
