Handmade Paper Pierced Cards
Simple and Stunning Series
by Patricia Wing
Have a whole lot of fun - making holes! This might not sound very interesting but, as with anything else, it is what
you do with it that counts. Paper pricking has been around at least since the 18th century, when delicate designs
were pricked out with a pin to make Valentines. Now there are a variety of different tools and lots of papers to
whet your appetite...
...and of course you can add beads, thread, quilling, paper punches, rub down transfers and pressed flowers to
your work. This is a method of decorating a card that I enjoy a lot, and there are some lovely cards in this book
to inspire you. I am yet to find any of the beautiful metal embellishments that the author uses to great advantage,
but the other items are the sort of thing any craft store or site worth its salt will sell. My only problem with
this book is the lack of pricking patterns - not a single one can be found, not even for a beginner to try out.
Instead you need brass templates - lots of them - and although they certainly get put through their paces they are
pricey items. One of the things I like most about paper pricking is that it is comparatively low-cost and uses up
leftover items from other projects thus earning my approval for being a green craft. It is true that this book will
certainly show you how to maximise your collection of brass templates if you already have one, but subtitling the
book "Using Brass Templates" might have been a great idea. This is a beautiful book however, and makes use of a
wide range of modern craft items in very imaginative and quite spectacular ways, backed up with easy-to-follow
staged instructions. Like Cynthia Rapson’s Embroidery on Paper (also
reviewed on this site) this is an essential for
any owner of brass templates, and surely a good excuse to splash out on at least a couple.
