The Oil Painter’s Pocket Palette
Practical visual guidance to over 600 colour mixes
by Rosalind Cuthbert
It is not easy mixing the right color for your painting - it is certainly something that I have never been any good
at! Being told that professional artists mix most of the shades they need has me hiding my premixed tubes in
embarrassment... if this is you, then you need this book.
I like the way it starts with a section on how to use it; far from being complex, it is actually beautifully
simple. The colors used are all shown on two pages, and then by mixing each one with all the others you can see
what the results are. Other pages show you the effects when painting thinly or thickly, using thinning media and
with white added in different percentages. There are also sections on working with different colors, and finished
paintings shown using a limited palette of those colors to create effects. You can also find out how to mix a
particular range of each shade, and there is even a small section showing how pointillism works. This is only a
small book but nicely crammed with useful facts which are shown rather than told, and a fine addition to Search
Press’ growing range of books for all levels of artists.
If you cannot find a good range of oil painting materials used in this book locally (Daler-Rowney Artist’s Oil
Colors) try SearchPress.com for a list of suppliers. |
