If there is one name associated with the current trend for embroidery on paper then it must
surely be Erica Fortgens. This Dutch paper crafter has produced many books and kits on the
subject, and this is the latest one. Even if you have never tried this before you will find
it is not hard to do, and produces some impressive results.
Ah, how I do like a book filled with lovely projects but where so little is needed to
produce them! As long as you have colored card and paper, thread, pricking tool and mat,
needle and masking tape you have everything you need. What few stitches you need to know are
explained at the beginning (mainly down one hole and up another) and then you know enough to
instantly start making something. There are cards for new babies, Easter, Christmas, abstracts,
mandalas, florals, dogs and lovely frames. These are filled with fairy paper tole, but could
be used for anything and show how you can embroider a frame for showcasing another paper craft.
The baby clothes are cut out, stitched and mounted and the same is also done with hearts and
tags for a twist on the basic idea— a great way of using up oddments of card. Each
project is explained (no staged photographs, just words) but the finished items are
relatively easy to understand. A fun little book that makes an excellent addition to a
paper crafter’s library and which is easy enough for a beginner whilst containing more intricate
projects for seasoned stitchers.
