What do I need to take up crochet as a hobby? How do I look after
my equipment? What is broomstick crochet? How do I make picots?
These questions and many others are answered in this indispensable
book.
If you can think of a crochet question it probably gets answered
in here. Questions are grouped into sections such as how to start,
shaping, following pattern instructions, basic stitches etc and
each section has a color-coded edge you can see from the outside
of the book, as well as a mini-index at the front of each section.
There is also an index at the end, plus a table of hook sizes, abbreviations
and international symbols. I think that my own favorite part has
to be the “how it’s done” parts of some of the
stitch types such as spiders, bobbles, popcorn etc which gets the
reader stitching right away. The back of the book mentions that
it is suitable for both “beginners and experienced crocheters”
which is true up to a point. Anybody who can do the basics and wants
to branch out will find this book invaluable as it manages to answer
most of the questions people tend to ask at this stage. A total
beginner will learn about buying equipment, holding the hook and
yarn, doing chain etc but as the other basic stitches such as double
and treble etc are described in words only I would recommend the
purchase of a proper beginner’s book. For anybody else this
is a highly useful book to own that belongs firmly on the crocheter’s
keeper shelf.
