Writing is
everywhere and is often seen as merely a means of communicating
information rather than an art form in its own right. This book
introduces the beginner to the ancient art of calligraphy and shows
how easy it is to hand-letter anything you want beautifully.
Starting with a brief overview of writing and how calligraphy is
becoming more popular, this book sets out what you need and what
to do with it in an admirably short space. You don’t need
much to start this hobby, but you do need to know how to use it.
This is all here, shown in helpful staged photographs. Several classic
calligraphy fonts (or rather “hands”) are shown, such
as foundational, uncial, gothic and italic. The letters are depicted
with arrows indicating the movements of the pen. These are further
shown in shaped groups with more of those user friendly photographs
showing how they are formed. Add in a gallery at the back showing
some contemporary samples of calligraphic art and an index and this
is what you get; a remarkably simple and non-intimidating introduction
to the hobby in under a hundred small pages. This, together with
its low price, is sure to tempt many people to have a go. It reminds
me pleasantly of those small square books that Search Press started
out with. A good practical introductory primer.
