How-To Books/Sugarcraft

Sugarcraft has never been more popular than it is today, and the current craze for cupcakes means that it does not have to be saved for a special occasion. Here are seventy-five different sugar flowers to make and ideas for how to display them to advantage.

I love the way these books not only have a page devoted to getting the most out of the book but the selector which shows images of every flower. This makes it easy to choose one and get the look you want for your project. There are lists of tools, recipes for different types of frosting and tips on flat icing, piping and even how to make a piping bag. All of this is illustrated with photos making it more accessible to the novice icer, as are the parts devoted to the various flower techniques you will need to make the blooms. Each of these features a lifesizelife-size photo of the flower, instructions, list of what you need, pictures of the various parts you need to make and a skill rating. Choose from garden flowers like roses, lilies and sunflowers, through to seasonal favorites like poinsettias, bluebells and cherry blossom and even pine cones, mistletoe and holly. At the back is a short list of stockists and several pages of templates, while if you are stuck for ideas for a larger cake there are three ideas, – the spring one is absolutely gorgeous! I would suggest this book to improver level upwards, as it does not pretend to be a guide for the total beginner. Anybody with a bit of sugarcraft experience under their belt ought to be able to make something beautiful with this book, – almost too good to eat!
