Surround
yourself with knitted decorations this Christmas and put the
homemade back into the holidays. If you liked the Twenty to
Make book Mini Christmas Knits (also reviewed on this site)
by the same author then here is another batch of festive projects.
There are twenty-six items to make in here, as well as a larger
format which will open flat after a bit of use (always a good
thing). None of the projects uses much yarn so this is a good
opportunity to use up oddments in your stash as well as having
fun with sparkly lurex yarns. You can knit a Nativity scene
to start with, complete with hanging star and a stable to
put everybody in. The rest of the book has Santa, elf, penguins
in jumpers, a sleigh with reindeer, hanging decorations like
a turkey, mistletoe, baubles and even a wee paper chain not
made of paper to name a few. Each project has a full page
photograph plus written instructions, what you need and how
to make up. This is not a book that teaches knitting from
scratch, and is aimed at the intermediate knitter who can
cope with tiny detailed work and has a few projects under
their belt. There is an impressive section showing how to
make up the reindeer, make the heads, do a few common embroidery
stitches, make an i-cord and do three-needle castoff with
staged photographs. Sadly there is nothing like this for the
rather complex words-only description of Kitchener stitch,
blanket stitch and wrap and turn; this would have been really
useful. Apart from this I was pleased with this lovely book
of projects that are sure to make any Christmas decorating
look special and handmade.
