Want
to learn how to paint but don't know where to start? Search
Press' award winning Ready To Paint series might be the answer.
Transfer the tracings to your paper, work through the staged
project and you should have a picture to be proud of. While
you do this you will be learning how to paint.
It sounds simple and like all the best ideas it is, and it
works. This time the subject is Irish landscapes and there
are six in here, all very typical and in a watercolor style
reminiscent of Cotman himself. You get to learn about what
you need to buy - twelve colors and five brushes plus a few
ordinary extras - and then it is on with the projects. As
usual each project is in at least thirty or forty stages,
each adding some small detail and showing how in words and
a photograph. The sixth tracing has no instructions; you are
on your own to work it all out with the aid of a large picture
of the finished work. I always think that this is a nice touch,
as after that you are ready to try a bit of sketching yourself
with all the useful lessons from the book under your belt.
The tracings are reusable, so you can use them over and over
to get the right look if you need to. There is even a link
to a Facebook page where you can share your paintings with
other fans of this series, the finishing touch to a truly
great series of art books.
