Stephen Edwards has a rather unusual way of communicating (communion-cating, he calls it) in his book
Communion-Cating with God. As Edwards listens to songs, commercials, conversations and his surrounding
environment, he hears more than most of us—he hears messages from God. One may pass this off as Edwards’
placing his (rather than God’s) message into the various media that he heard and saw, but the instances of Edwards’
action and the corresponding message from God were too numerous to pass off that lightly.
Edwards also plays with the words. For example in a message from God is the line: "When you are SPE-a-king
from the heart, there is magic in the air." Edwards sees the word king in the word speaking whereas most of us
would never look for or see that.
Written in journal format, the book makes it easy for a reader to follow Edwards as he communes with God. The
book is filled with material we are all familiar with, and it is revealing when he takes one of our favorite songs
and explains how the message in the song is really a message to us from God.
Listen to how Edwards reacted to Faith Hill’s beautiful song Breathe: "I can feel the magic flow through
the air / Being with you gets me that way." Edwards take on this line: "I just needed to be—to be with God.
I felt closer to God than ever before; being with God gets you that way."
This is a most interesting book that encourages the reader to look for God in places and things he / she would
never think of looking before.
