Sabbath:
Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest and Delight
by Wayne Muller
Wayne Muller, minister, therapist, and founder of Bread for the Journey, a nonprofit that helps people become
neighborhood philanthropists, has produced a remarkable audiobook called Sabbath: Restoring the Sacred Rhythm
of Rest and Delight. It is the remedy for what Thomas Merton has called a "pervasive form of contemporary
violence." Merton refers to the ills of modern society: working too much and doing too much. We face burnout in
record numbers in our busyness to accomplish all that we think we need to do, even when we are doing good works.
Muller asserts that the only way we can find peace is to learn to reclaim the sacred tradition of the Sabbath,
a day of rest, at the end of a busy week.
In three CDs, lasting three hours, Muller presents his case on why we need to rest and what happens when we
do. He also looks at traditions across many cultures and spiritual practices that hold a day of rest as being
essential to the happiness of human beings. In one telling scriptural reference to Exodus, Muller says, "The
Sabbath is for you." He asserts we need a time to pause amid our work in order to appreciate what we have done
and what we have, and, most importantly, to value those around us. In this audiobook, Muller offers suggestions
to create a Sabbath time for us, whatever our spiritual path. Sabbath: Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest and
Delight has been something I have been looking for in my quest to find balance in my life. We need rest, and
we need to not feel guilty about taking precious time for it. As Muller says, when we return to ordinary time, we
have the inspiration that we seek, we have the energy we need to accomplish what we must, and, most of all, we
have a peace that we can carry with us throughout the other days of the week.
Thank you, Wayne Muller. Sabbath: Restoring the Sacred Rhythm of Rest and Delight is a blessing. I'm
telling everybody I know about this one! |
