Saint Francis of Assisi
Devotions, Prayers & Living Wisdom
by Mirabai Starr (editor)
Editor Mirabai Starr has compiled a very informative and tasteful series in his Devotions, Prayers and Living
Wisdom books, which include Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Teresa
of Avila (three that will be reviewed on MyShelf.com this month), Hildegard of Bingen, and Our
Lady of Guadalupe.
As with the other books in this series, Starr begins with a prayer to Saint Francis asking for the wisdom to
live the simple wisdom of the saint and seeking not so much to be understood but to understand and love. Starr
then gives us a brief history of Francis’ rise in the church and provides more prayers, poems and essays.
Starr’s discussion of the beatitudes is sacred writing at its best.
Starr chronicles the actions of St. Francis which led to the reformation of the entire Catholic Church.
Francis did this not through revolution of dissension but with his gracious persuasion and the activities of
his own life.
This book captures the essence of a saint who had such a great influence on the church of his day and allows
the reader to see how a simple but devout life can be the best life of all. Each of the three books in this
series are pocket-sized and contain a beautiful illustration of the saint. |
