Saint Teresa of Avila
Devotions, Prayers & Living Wisdom
by Mirabai Starr (editor)
Editor Mirabai Starr has compiled a very informative and tasteful series in his Devotions, Prayers and Living
Wisdom books, which include Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Michael the
Archangel (three that will be reviewed on MyShelf.com this month), Hildegard of Bingen, and Our
Lady of Guadalupe.
As with other books in this series, Starr begins with a prayer to the saint in which he prays for active
service here on earth combined with joyful intimacy with the Beloved.
The author gives a more detailed history of Teresa than he did of Michael, probably because she is not as
well known as Michael.
One story tells of her love for a young priest, but Teresa turns the conversation and love away from the
personal and back to the Divine, thus avoiding falling into sin. This book captures the essence of a woman and
allows the reader to draw on Teresa’s strength in time of need. Each of the three books in this series are
pocket-sized and contain a beautiful illustration of the saint.
This is an easy-to-read book that captures the personality of one of our best know saints. |
