To Bless The Space Between Us

by John Donohue

Irish Poet John Donohue has recorded his book, To Bless The Space Between Us, as a Sounds True audiobook. It is a most intelligent decision by Donohue and his publishers, if for no reason other than to be able to hear Donohue’s Irish tones color his beautiful words. But more importantly, having Donohue speak his poetic blessings allows the listener to hear the nuances that the poet intended for each blessing.

In four CDs, Donohue brings to life over eighty original blessings he wrote for seven different crossings, the spaces we experience between one activity, one stage of life, one consciousness, and another. Though Donohue says these are not poems but rather blessings meant to confer something difficult to say, they are no less poetic, full of sensitive turns of speech that speak to the heart and soul and not just the mind. Donohue insists that poetry uses language to work beneath the surface and a blessing is a direct address to someone or something.

The first CD contains a brief introduction into what a blessing is and how to use one. Donohue also introduces each of the seven sections and each blessing. The seven areas are Beginnings, Desires, Thresholds, Homecoming, States of Heart, Callings, and Beyond Endings. There are expected blessings, such as for a new home, for a new mother or father, for a birthday, for love and friendship, for traveling, and death. There also unexpected blessings: for an artist, for a prisoner, for different professions, for young people on the threshold of womanhood or manhood, and even for the parents of a child who has committed a crime. In addition, Donohue has plenty of blessings for beginning one’s day, ending it, grace before and after meals, and much, much more.

I was very impressed with the breadth of Donohue's blessings. There is something here for nearly every possible threshold of change in the human condition. Donohue also gives instructions on how to use these blessings. They can be private blessings or used as prayers for others or they can be meditations that open up doors of possibility and hope. Because the CDs come with an accompanying card that lists each blessing, a specific blessing can be found simply by finding the track on your CD player or computer.

To Bless The Space Between Us is a wonderful gift that Donohue has given the world. The blessings are empowering and thought-provoking. The blessing form, as he explains, can also help us create our own personal blessings if we so wish.

Very highly recommended.
