From Pastor Mark Batterson’s title to his book Wild Goose Chase, one might infer that the search for God is a
wild goose chase in the traditional sense—a fool-hardy adventure bound for failure; but the author meant
anything but this in his interpretation of the title.
Batterson takes the angle that our search for God takes us on a wild goose chase, but if we will listen and obey,
we will come closer to doing what God bids us to do.
Batterson identifies and elaborates on six cages which keep us from taking on this chase that God offers us. The
six cages are: (1) cage of responsibility, (2) cage of routine, (3) cage of assumption, (4) cage of guilt, (5)
cage of failure, and (6) cage of fear. The author gives examples from both biblical times and the modern age of how
people used these cages to resist the wild goose chase that God planned for them.
According to Batterson, playing it safe won’t get it done. God, in many cases, asks more of us than going to
church on Sunday and listening to a sermon.
The author gives several examples of people who were sent on a wild goose chase for God—Moses, Paul and the
disciples to name a few.
Reading through the six cages and understanding their power, the reader can gain insights on how to shed these
cages and go on a wild goose chase for God.
