Amish Proverbs
by Suzanne Woods Fisher
This small square book with its hard shiny
cover is just the right size for a bedside table, and perfect for
picking up last thing at night (or first thing in the morning) for
a few words of wisdom. In here are some wonderfully pithy sayings
that get right to the heart of the matter in just a sentence, making
you think, nod in agreement or just plain laugh out loud.
As it says in the introduction you can learn a lot about a people
by their sayings, and the wisdom of a whole way of life is in here.
The book is divided into sections, dealing with various aspects
of life and it’s living including faith, work, family, money,
trouble and just plain old fun. Each chapter starts with a story
to illustrate something of what the Amish attitude to the subject
is, and there are plenty of lovely photographs to enjoy as we ponder
on the sayings. Views of Lancaster County in its unspoilt glory
and in various seasons, farms, Amish going about their daily lives
and more. I think that if I have a personal favorite proverb from
this book it has to be “it’s what you learn after you
know it that counts”. Not only is it very true, but it also
seems to encapsulate a lot about the Amish and their attitudes;
a mixture of wisdom, humility, patience and good solid common sense.
