Should We Fire God?
Finding Hope in God When We Don't Understand
by Jim Pace
"Maybe our world is violently spinning out of control and those of us with
faith in God are just the last ones to get the memo."
So begins the Introduction of Pace's book. In an
almost tongue in cheek way, Pace examines some very delicate questions we often are too
afraid to ask and even more afraid to answer. He doesn't hesitate to approach the problem,
but he does so in such as a way as to make the reader feel as if he has not been the only
one to ask. Pace is frank, humorous, enlightening, and not at all pedantic or authoritarian.
His approach makes the reader want to keep reading and discovering. And yet Pace backs his
answers with Biblical references presented in a teaching way.
You may never find this book on the scholar's reading list or in the library of a
theological seminary. But as a pastor and a counselor, I promise you will find the book on
my shelf. I'll recommend it to people who are having a hard time with hard times and want a
clear and supportive answer, not some theological pronouncements and biblical verses that
confuse the issue. This is more of a conversation with the author than a text. Maybe more
of our theological discussions ought to take a lesson from Jim Pace. Speak to be understood
and answer to enlighten. Good job. |
