David Platt
has issued the same challenge to the church as a whole in Radical
Together as he issued to individual Christians in Radical:
follow the examples of Jesus in making decisions about church functions
and finances.
The author suggests that God is not pleased with huge churches with
multi-million dollar budgets that basically do entertainment and
comfort for the members while the job of getting the message about
the Gospel goes undone.
In order to do this people must do radical things: such as live
in smaller homes, spend less money on themselves and put more effort
into speaking God's word, especially to foreign countries where
the knowledge of the Bible is almost non-existent.
Platt offers
concrete ways to accomplish this radical change in the way that
churches operate but critics who oppose this idea (and there will
be such critics) will have to face the fact that the author is taking
his ideas straight from the Bible.
An interesting point of the narrative is Platt's defense of his
salary as he used biblical references to the need for paying church
leaders. He doesn't say how much of this money will be used to accomplish
the plans he had set forth.
Christians need to read this (and the companion book Radical)
and ask themselves if they are willing to give up the comfort and
ease of the churches today for this new radical plan.
