In Raising
the Dead a Christian doctor becomes a bold and radicalized
Christian during his quest to save the life of his son, Chad. Through
his search for a medical cure - using spiritual help from anywhere
available - he witnesses and later comes to perform modern-day miracles,
including raising a man from his hospital deathbed.
One must keep
an open mind when reading a book like this. Concepts such as being
'slain in the spirit,' speaking in tongues, and the idea that objects
in one's home can evoke the presence of Satan may be off-putting
to many. But Dr. Crandall tells his story with great conviction.
It is worth hearing him out.
Dr. Crandall
researched cutting-edge medicine while his wife, who struggled with
her own serious health issues, focused on a spiritual approach to
healing their son of leukemia. He attended missionary conferences
where he sought out 'average' people - not celebrity types - and
met a man whose shadow was healing those whom it touched. Dr. Crandall's
belief in such miracles caused professionals in his social circle
to think he was becoming a religious fanatic.
At one healing
ceremony Dr. Crandall approached a spiritual healer and was 'blown
backward' as he was 'touched by the spirit.' This and other experiences
caused him to believe in spiritual healing and to eventually use
prayer and procedures such as anointing patients with oil, alongside
traditional medicine, in his cardiology practice.
The 'principle
of exchange' kept him going in his search for a cure for his son's
leukemia: God blesses us when we allow ourselves to be used by God
to bless others. Dr. Crandall believed that blessings would come
to him for being 'on the front lines for God.' He sometimes felt
that he should leave his medical practice for a profession in spiritual
healing, until a message from God became a turning point in his
life and medical practice.
Although he
was unable to save his son's life - despite Herculean efforts -
Dr. Crandall and his wife came to eventually see that Chad is fine
in heaven and is still aware of his family's earthly presence.
Dr. Crandall
very honestly tells of various medical errors which occurred in
his son's treatments - - even with a Yale-educated cardiologist/father
closely monitoring his care. This was eye-opening and made his entire
amazing story seem credible.
