Chuck Swindoll never dreamed of being a preacher and with good reason. He stuttered. He could not complete one sentence without stuttering. Speaking in front of the class was sheer torture. But a counselor had confidence in him and introduced him to the school's drama teacher.

That teacher told Chuck that he'd have the lead in a school play by the end of the year. Chuck didn't see how it could be possible, but he got to work. By the end of the year, he had that starring role.

Now, he has written a book on public speaking entitled Saying It Well. In this book, he gives several basic principles for giving a good public speech. First, he says to know yourself. You don't know what you can do until you know yourself and learn to be comfortable with yourself. If you are naturally serious, be serious in your speaking. If you are naturally funny, you will probably be able to use humor successfully when it is appropriate. Whatever you do, be yourself. It's okay to admire someone, but don't try to be that person. You'll never pull it off.

The book is filled with these tips that Reverend Swindoll has learned during his years in the ministry. It isn't a boring book, either. Little anecdotes, some funny, some not, demonstrate each point. The book is well-written, easy to understand and interesting. It won't immediately make you a superb public speaker. It will, however, give you some idea of where to start. Using his own career as a preacher, he takes you through several steps to improve your public speaking and avoid some of the pitfalls beginning speakers step into unwittingly. You don't have to be a preacher to benefit from this book. I learned a lot. So, listen to Saying It Well and learn to "say it well."
