The Silver Chair
The Chronicles of Narnia
By C.S. Lewis
Read by Jeremy Northam

Narnia is in peril and only Eustace and Jill can save the magical land from being overtaken. Without Prince Rilian to inherit the throne of his father King Caspian X, Narnia is in danger of being taken over by an evil sorceress. It is up to the Son of Adam and Daughter of Eve (what humans are called by the English-speaking animal population of the enchanted realm) to find Rilian and save him from whatever or whoever has him imprisoned. With the help of Puddleglum, a cynical, yet still somehow loveable Marsh-wiggle, the two young heroes set off for an adventure that they will never forget. Can they get to Prince Rilian before it’s too late or will the people-eating Giants stop them from saving their beloved fantasy world from being destroyed by the evil enchantments of the malevolent darkness lurking beneath Narnia’s mystical exterior.

I am a HUGE C.S. Lewis fan. The Chronicles of Narnia series is one that I have a fondness for because of the huge impact it had on my imagination as a child. The first book of the series “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” was an incredible first look at the land that Eustace and Jill are trying to save in “The Silver Chair”. Seven books in all, the series is one of the most loved by men, women, and children of all ages. The impact of the chronicles, though, is felt at a much deeper, creative level with the audio versions of the books. “The Silver Chair” is a magical, adventurous story of trials, lessons, and tribulations of both Eustace and Jill as well as the beloved inhabitants of Narnia. Anyone who is a big fan of C.S. Lewis’ writing style and tales of fantastical characters in incredible situations like J.R.R. Tolkein’s creations (who was a fellow member of an informal writers’ club called the Inklings with Lewis) will love this audio version of a spell-binding classic.

Jeremy Northam, who is the reader of the 6 hour/4 cassette unabridged audio book, brings the mellow nature of the English countryside to full effect with his smooth voice and incredible vocal acting skills. Best known for his parts in major films like “Emma” and “Gosford Park,” Northam was a great choice for recording this masterpiece on tape.
