Tato
by Kathe Gogolewski
Upper elementary and middle school children who enjoy fantasy and adventure may be interested
in this fast paced tale, TATO. The book focuses on 7 year old, Michael and his
13 year old sister, Nini. Michael is in denial over the death of his beloved grandfather,
Gankum. In order to get some sense of control and power back in his life, he decides to
mix up a batch of a magic formula that can turn a potato into a baby. Excited at the
prospect of making a new baby brother for the family, Michael enlists the help of skeptical
Nini, who would rather read a book than indulge in her brother's silly fantasies. After
that, TATO becomes a non-stop thrill ride that reminds me in parts of The
Indian in the Cupboard, Alice in Wonderland, and Labyrinth. Unfortunately,
the character, Tato, reminds me of Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars Episode I The Phantom
Menace but since this book is for children, I don't think they'll have the same hang
up as me.
Overall, this is a highly creative and exciting book. Some parents may be wary of
a book that involves magic, so this book would not be appropriate for their children.
However, parents who don't mind magic in children's books would probably discover their
child quickly reading through this unusual and captivating story. |
