What's With This Room?
by Tom Lichtenheld
What's With This Room? is about the classic battle between parents who want cleanliness
and kids who like their rooms a little unusual. Of course, this bedroom is seriously over
the top with leftover food, lots of wildlife, underwear on the ceiling fan, and a dead
monster under the bed. The kid, of course, has lots of reasons why it's good to have such a
room. The art in the book is just delightful. My favorite picture is of hapless trick-or-treaters
examining the "treats" that grew from the leftover food in the room. The book is pure
silliness from end to end, and though the main character does decide cleaning his room
wasn't a bad idea, the route he takes to come to the decision is definitely not one readers
are likely to follow. The age group for this book is fairly high because of the linguistic
gymnastics Lictenheld goes through in this rhyming text: it wouldn't be hard to follow
for any school-aged child but it would be a bit over-the-head of younger readers. My five-year-old
daughter was quite concerned for the dead monster under the bed, but that would have an
older child giggling. Be sure to check out the illustrated end-papers of the book, which
include such useful bits as how to make your bed (using a hammer and drill) and proper
t-shirt folding. |
