Abigale the Happy Whale

by Peter Farrelly
Illustrated by Jamie Rama

This picture book with an adorable bug eyed whale is an eco-friendly story about pollution in the ocean and the toll it takes on marine life. Abigale’s pod is unhappy because there is so much junk cluttering up the ocean. Some of her fish friends are sick from eating unhealthy food and hurt from incidents with junk on the ocean floor.

Cheerful Abigale is sad to discover that her pod is planning to beach itself to get attention from the humans. A duck that has been through an oil slick tells her that beaching will get them nowhere because people see him and it doesn’t do any good.

Abigale decides to blow the junk out of the ocean and onto the beach. The other whales and marine life help out, and ultimately, the people take the junk to the dump.

This book has adorable illustrations that will appeal to any child, but the subject matter is suited to early elementary school children who are beginning to develop a perception of life outside of themselves. In a way that isn’t too heavy handed, the book drives home that point that pollution doesn’t help anybody and people should be considerate of the environment. Overall, a cute book to help children begin to think about ecology.
