Art
by Author/Illustrator: Patrick McDonnell
Art loves to make art - kinetic, unrestrained, personal art. Splotches, stripes, swirls, and
squiggles fill the book as Art makes his art, culminating in a vibrant masterpiece from
his dreams. The simple text is a perfect accompaniment to Art's page-filling art. The book
also borrows a moment from Harold and the Purple Crayon as Art creates a tiny doodle
looking decidedly self-portrait-ish and then draws a world for the doodle. The picture
of Art standing on the doorframe of his house drawing in order to reach the roof is classic
Crockett Johnson. The book's ending with the touching scene of a mother's support provides
a definite "aww" moment for reading parents. My daughter not only enjoyed Art, she
immediately had to go and create some art of her own. What better thing could a book possibly do? |
