Danny's Secret
by Annie Thiel
Illustrated by W. M. Edwards
Danny always keeps secrets: like the time he and his mother planned a secret birthday party for Grandfather. They
made sure he was home, then went to the farm to visit him. It was a good secret, and Grandfather was sure
surprised. The kids at school know Danny always keeps secrets too, but Danny's friend Rick tells Danny a scary
secret. Rick's father sometimes gets very drunk and does scary things. Danny promises not to tell anyone, but he
feels wrong about keeping this secret. What should he do? Is it ever okay to break a promise to a friend?
This is a great book for parents to use as a teaching tool to let children know that it is ok to tell scary
or bad secrets to a parent, teacher, counselor or coach, or to another adult they trust. The back pages of the
book give tips on how to keep good secrets; how to tell if a scary secret is hurting someone and should be shared
with an adult; along with things to do to help children tell the difference between good and bad secrets.
Read this book at family time to start conversations with children about secret keeping. This book should be
in every library and part of pre-school curriculum. |
