Dolores Meets Her Match
by Barbara Samuels
Duncan is a truly amazing cat. He's brave, kind, and helpful, and his owner, Dolores, is the recognized cat
expert at her school...that is, until Hillary shows up with her cat, Harold. Harold is Siamese with ancestors that were
prize winning show cats, and he can say meow seven different ways. Duncan is chubby and just wants to take naps.
The competition is intense as the two girls try to convince everyone that their cat is the greatest. Dolores'
big sister, Faye, advises Dolores to just let Duncan be Duncan. Then when Pet Day at school comes, and Hillary makes a
papier-mâché maze in the shape of King Tut's ancient Egyptian tomb, assuring everyone that Harold can find his way
through the maze and escape in one minute and fifteen seconds, and Harold gets stuck, things really get serious.
The funny, whimsical illustrations add wonderful visual interest to this story of the unexpected consequences
of competition and the wisdom of accepting each individual as they are. Read this hilarious story at family time or
bedtime and start a conversation. |
